The Chancery of the Accra Reset, an African health and economic sovereignty initiative championed by John Dramani Mahama, has announced the formation of a high-level panel on the reform of global health architecture and governance.

The 18-member panel will be co-chaired by Peter Piot, El Hadj As Sy, Nísia Trindade, and Budi Gunadi Sadikin. It has been tasked with producing actionable proposals aimed at restructuring the global health system, which it says has historically treated governments in the Global South as passive participants rather than active decision-makers.

The panel’s work will be supported by a High-Level Consultative Group, designed to facilitate engagement with key global health and financial institutions, including the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, Global Fund, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, African Union Development Agency, and the International Finance Corporation.

According to the statement, the panel will begin work immediately, with its terms of reference to be ratified with input from institutions such as the World Health Assembly and the United Nations General Assembly.

Former Executive Director of UNAIDS and former Mali Health Minister Michel Sidibé has been appointed Special Advisor to the panel and envoy to the co-chairs. He is expected to support the panel’s work with his experience in global health systems.

The announcement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
