Journalist launches Health Initiative with donation to Accra Psychiatric Hospital

A Ghanaian journalist and host of the Accra-based CTV Clinic Health Show, Afia Brempomaa Hinneh, has marked her birthday with a donation to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, using the occasion to promote awareness of mental health issues.

The gesture also coincided with the official launch of the Brempomaa Health Initiative Ghana, a programme aimed at supporting mental health, particularly among children.

Speaking during the event, Ms. Hinneh emphasised the importance of prioritising children’s mental well-being, urging parents and guardians to pay closer attention to early signs of mental health challenges.

She noted that timely support and increased awareness are critical to building healthier futures for young people.

Staff of the hospital expressed appreciation for the donation but used the opportunity to highlight ongoing resource constraints affecting patient care.

Bridget Helegbe, Head of the Special Ward, revealed that the facility faces significant challenges in maintaining basic hygiene due to shortages of essential supplies.

She disclosed that the hospital uses approximately 450 diapers daily, with each pack costing about GHS150, placing a considerable financial strain on the institution.

Hospital authorities appealed for continued public support, particularly in the supply of items such as diapers and detergents, to help improve patient care conditions.

The appeal underscores broader concerns about mental healthcare funding and the need for increased awareness and investment in the sector across Ghana.
