Burkina Faso has lifted restrictions on the export of fresh tomatoes, allowing trade with Ghana to resume.

The decision follows bilateral talks led by Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare.

Burkina Faso had earlier suspended tomato exports on March 19, a move that worsened supply shortages in Ghana.

Ghana has expressed satisfaction over Burkina Faso’s decision to resume fresh tomato exports, a development expected to ease supply constraints and help stabilise prices on the local market.

In a statement issued on April 2, 2026, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry described the reversal as the result of sustained bilateral engagement between the two countries.

The Ministry noted that discussions held between Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare and her Burkinabe counterparts on the sidelines of the WTO MC14 in Yaoundé, Cameroon, played a key role in securing the lifting of the restriction.

It assured the public of continued collaboration with authorities in Burkina Faso and local stakeholders to sustain a stable and mutually beneficial trading relationship.

The government also indicated that efforts are being stepped up to strengthen Ghana’s domestic tomato sector. Programmes such as Feed the Industry and Feed Ghana are aimed at increasing production, improving yields, and ensuring a consistent supply.

Additional measures, including irrigation initiatives and the allocation of land for large-scale farming, are being implemented to support all-year-round cultivation and deepen linkages with processors.

The Ministry further urged traders and industry players to support government interventions intended to protect both consumers and local processing firms.

Authorities say these measures form part of a broader strategy to boost local industry while promoting sustainable agricultural growth.
