World Affairs Council of Philadelphia: President Mahama receives International Statesperson Award for Global Leadership and Peace
President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured with the prestigious International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, in recognition of his contributions to global leadership, peace, and democratic governance.
The award, regarded as the highest distinction conferred by the Council, celebrates outstanding international figures whose work advances peace, freedom, and lasting impact on global affairs. Established in 1973, the honour has been presented periodically to leaders who demonstrate exceptional commitment to international cooperation and progress.
With this recognition, President Mahama becomes the first African leader to receive the Council’s top honour since its inception over five decades ago.
Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, March 27, 2026, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Lauren Swartz, praised Mahama’s leadership and global outlook.
“Throughout his distinguished career, President Mahama has exemplified the qualities this award seeks to honour—steadfast democratic leadership, the strengthening of international partnerships, championing peaceful political transitions, and advancing economic and regional prosperity, alongside his global advocacy for Africa,” she said.
The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia described itself as a platform “where continents, cultures, and ideas connect,” underscoring its mission to promote global understanding and dialogue.
In his acceptance speech, President Mahama attributed his commitment to peace and development to the enduring legacy of Africa’s founding leaders, including Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda.
“My motivation has always been inspired by the vision and sacrifices of Africa’s forebears, whose pursuit of justice, unity, and freedom continues to guide our collective aspirations,” he noted.
The recognition further cements President Mahama’s standing on the global stage as a leading voice on democratic governance, regional integration, and Africa’s role in shaping international discourse.
