The Ghana Police Service has pledged a comprehensive probe into allegations by celebrated Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama that he was assaulted by police officers in Tamale.

The commitment comes after a high-level meeting between Mr Mahama, the Inspector-General of Police, and members of the Police Management Board, as authorities move to address the incident said to have occurred on March 21.

Addressing journalists after the engagement, Director-General of Public Affairs, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, revealed that the IGP had held direct discussions with the artist and reiterated the Service’s resolve to establish the facts surrounding the matter.

She indicated that the IGP listened carefully to Mr Mahama’s account and assured him that investigations would be pursued to their logical conclusion.

According to DCOP Ansah-Akrofi, preliminary inquiries were launched shortly after the issue was brought to the attention of the Police leadership.

She added that progress has already been made at the regional level, with officers recording statements from Mr Mahama and his associates, inspecting the location of the alleged incident, and visiting him at his residence.

She further disclosed that the IGP has since elevated the case to ensure a more detailed and far-reaching investigation.

The Police Service, she noted, remains committed to engaging Mr Mahama throughout the process.

DCOP Ansah-Akrofi also mentioned that the artist acknowledged his previous cordial relationship with the Police during the meeting.

Reaffirming the Service’s stance on accountability, she stressed that any officer found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

She urged the public to remain composed as investigations continue, assuring that both Mr Mahama and the general public will be duly updated on developments.
