The Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area, Tongo-Raana Kolbilsong Namalteng, has called on the government to take urgent and decisive action to address the growing menace of illegal mining in the area.

Speaking during an engagement with officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the revered traditional leader expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of illegal mining on farmlands and water bodies.

“This activity is rapidly destroying our farms and water bodies. We must take effective action to eliminate or minimise this danger,” he stated.

The Tongo-Raana described the situation as a serious threat to local livelihoods, warning that continued environmental degradation could undermine food security and the well-being of communities within the Talensi enclave.

He further called for stricter regulation in the issuance of mining licenses, stressing that some permits are granted without the knowledge or involvement of traditional authorities.

According to him, greater collaboration between government agencies and traditional leaders is essential to ensure transparency and accountability in the licensing process.

Despite his concerns, the Paramount Chief expressed support for the government’s cooperative mining initiative, noting that it holds promise in formalising small-scale mining activities while promoting safety and environmental protection.

The call adds to growing pressure on authorities to intensify efforts in tackling illegal mining and safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
