Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that prominent United States civil rights activist, Al Sharpton, has declared full support for Ghana’s resolution at the United Nations seeking to recognise the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Ablakwa shared images from a meeting with Sharpton, indicating that the veteran social justice advocate had pledged “full and absolute support” for the initiative championed by President John Dramani Mahama.

The resolution, which is expected to be considered at the United Nations, forms part of Ghana’s broader push for global recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity and to advance the cause of reparatory justice.

Sharpton, a long-standing figure in the US civil rights movement, is known for his advocacy on racial justice and equality. His endorsement adds to growing international support for Ghana’s position on the issue.

Ghana has been actively engaging global stakeholders and the African diaspora in building momentum for the resolution, which seeks to affirm historical truths and promote accountability for the legacy of slavery.
