Poor Ayanfuri–Dunkwa road raises health and economic concerns in Central Region
Residents of Ayanfuri in Ghana’s Central Region are raising alarm over the deteriorating condition of the Ayanfuri–Dunkwa-on-Offin highway, citing its growing impact on health, education, and local economic activity.
Medical personnel at the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital report an increase in dust-related illnesses, including eye infections and respiratory conditions, which they attribute to the dusty and uneven nature of the road.
Hospital officials say the facility itself is not spared, as dust continues to affect both patients and staff.
Residents say the poor road network has significantly increased travel time and vehicle maintenance costs, while also disrupting business operations in the area.
At Ayanfuri Senior High School, authorities report declining student enrolment, a situation believed to be linked to accessibility challenges posed by the road.
Community leaders have expressed disappointment over what they describe as years of neglect, despite multiple appeals and reports that the road contract has already been awarded.
The local Assemblyman noted that the situation has persisted under successive governments, leaving residents to endure worsening conditions.
The Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West, Rudolph Amoako Gyampa, has called on the government to prioritise rehabilitation works on the highway.
He warned that the condition of the road is not only affecting transportation but also posing serious public health risks to residents.
Residents say they are hopeful that authorities will act swiftly to address the situation and restore safe and reliable access to the community.
