Tensions are rising over the planned redevelopment of the Kasoa Old Market, as authorities move ahead with a demolition exercise aimed at modernising the facility.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East Municipality in the Central Region, Seth Sabah Sewornoo-Banini, has strongly defended the decision, urging traders to refrain from politicising the process.

Speaking after a final engagement with traders ahead of the demolition, Mr. Sewornoo-Banini emphasised that the exercise was necessary to improve trading conditions and enhance infrastructure in the area.

He noted that the redevelopment project is intended to replace the existing structures with modern facilities that will ultimately benefit traders.

According to the MCE, the Assembly has undertaken extensive consultations with stakeholders, stressing that the initiative is not abrupt but the result of careful planning.

He further cautioned traders to comply with directives to vacate the market before the demolition begins, warning that any resistance would be handled in accordance with the law.

Mr. Sewornoo-Banini also dismissed allegations of personal interest in the project, insisting that the redevelopment is being carried out solely in the public interest.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Kasoa Union of Traders Association, Felix Kwame Anoma, confirmed that traders have been adequately engaged and are prepared to relocate.

He described a recent protest by a section of traders as unrepresentative, indicating that the majority support the redevelopment.

Adding his perspective, the Municipal Physical Planning Officer, Stephen Kakraba, revealed that the redevelopment plan predates the current administration.

He explained that the project forms part of a broader strategy to upgrade infrastructure within the municipality, describing it as being in the “greater good” of the area.
