Mahama invites South Korean President as Ghana and Korea prepare to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations
John Dramani Mahama has extended an invitation to Lee Jae-myung to visit Ghana as both countries begin preparations to commemorate 50 years of formal diplomatic relations in 2027.
The invitation was made during bilateral talks held at the Blue House, where President Mahama was warmly received by the South Korean leader.
President Mahama’s visit marks a notable diplomatic milestone, as he becomes the first African president to be hosted by President Lee Jae-myung since the South Korean leader assumed office last year.
During their meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between Ghana and the South Korea ahead of the historic 50th anniversary of bilateral relations.
The discussions covered a wide range of sectors aimed at deepening economic and technological collaboration between the two nations.
Key areas included agribusiness, maritime security, artificial intelligence, value addition for critical minerals, automotive manufacturing, infrastructure development - particularly railways - chocolate production using Ghana’s cocoa, capacity building, and trade expansion.
As part of the visit, Ghana and South Korea signed three strategic agreements focused on maritime security, science, technology and innovation, and climate protection.
The agreements are expected to strengthen institutional cooperation and create new opportunities for knowledge transfer and investment between the two countries.
President Mahama described the relationship between Ghana and South Korea as one built on mutual respect and shared development goals, adding that both countries are eager to deepen their partnership as they approach the 50-year milestone.
The planned anniversary celebrations in 2027 are expected to highlight decades of diplomatic engagement, economic collaboration, and cultural exchange between the two nations.
