President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the empowerment and full participation of women in national development as Ghana joined the global community to mark International Women’s Day 2026.

In a message issued to commemorate the day under the theme “Give to Gain,” the president highlighted the importance of investing in women and girls, stressing that their empowerment plays a crucial role in promoting national prosperity and sustainable development.

According to him, providing women with opportunities, resources, and strong institutional support creates positive ripple effects across society.

“When women are provided with opportunities, resources, and unwavering support, families and communities thrive, leading to broader social and economic transformation,” the president stated.

President Mahama also called for a renewed national commitment to breaking down barriers that hinder the progress of women and girls.

He urged stakeholders across government, private institutions, and communities to work together to create pathways that enable every Ghanaian woman and girl to realise her full potential.

The president’s message formed part of activities marking International Women’s Day, a global observance that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while advocating gender equality.

Ghana, like many countries around the world, used the occasion to reflect on progress made in promoting women’s rights and to renew commitments toward greater gender inclusion in leadership, education, and economic participation.

President Mahama's 2020 and 2024 campaign resulted in Ghana having its first-ever female Vice President, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
