The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has organised a media engagement aimed at deepening public understanding and promoting the implementation of Ghana’s Affirmative Action Act.

The engagement brought together media practitioners and key stakeholders to discuss the significance of the Act and the crucial role of the media in educating the public on its objectives and benefits.

The Affirmative Action Act seeks to promote equal opportunities for women and marginalized groups, particularly in the areas of employment, leadership, governance, and education. The legislation is expected to address long-standing gender inequalities and ensure a more inclusive and balanced society.

Addressing the media, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, emphasised that the engagement was intended to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry and the media to ensure the dissemination of accurate and factual information about the Act.

According to the minister, the media plays a critical role in shaping public perception and creating awareness on national policies. She therefore urged journalists and media houses to become active advocates of the Affirmative Action Act by highlighting its importance and educating the public on the opportunities it presents for women and girls across the country.

Dr Lartey noted that the Act is not designed to create unfair advantages, but rather to bridge existing gaps that have historically limited the participation of women in leadership, employment, and educational advancement. She stressed that promoting gender equity is essential for national development and social progress.

She further encouraged the media to serve as a reliable channel through which the public can better appreciate the purpose of the law and support efforts toward achieving gender equality in Ghana.

The Affirmative Action Act is widely seen as a major milestone in Ghana’s democratic and social development agenda, as it seeks to ensure that women are adequately represented and empowered in both public and private sectors. Stakeholders believe effective public education and media support will be key to the successful implementation of the law.
