About 30 people have died in galamsey-related incidents across mining districts in the Eastern Region since January 2026, according to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The revelation follows the deaths of seven miners at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atiwa East District.

The seven were confirmed dead after a mining pit collapsed within the concession of Xtra Gold Mining Company.

Deputy Eastern Regional NADMO Director in charge of Technical and Disaster Risk Reduction, Emmanuel Konja Tullah, disclosed the figure while briefing the media at the scene.

"We have had a series of galamsey-related deaths numbering not less than 30 within the region in 2026," he said.

He added that the repeated incidents highlight the need for stricter enforcement of safety measures at mining sites.

Mr Tullah said NADMO would work with concession owners and other agencies to educate miners on safety and how to properly secure or cover abandoned mining pits. 

"The concession owners must strengthen their oversight activities, ensuring the necessary coordination and security measures so these incidents do not recur. NADMO is going to partner with them and other agencies as we intensify this education," he said.
