A delegation from the National Ambulance Service, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr George Kofi Owusu, has officially briefed the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, on plans to acquire ambulances for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The meeting, held at The Square, brought together the Deputy Minister, the Chief Director and other senior officials to deliberate on ensuring transparency and strict adherence to due process in the acquisition process.

Discussions focused on the operational condition and suitability of the ambulances intended for use by the Armed Forces.

Dr Owusu explained that, following advice from the Attorney-General’s Department regarding about 30 ambulances procured in 2016 by the Ministry of Health for the Ambulance Service, the Board is taking additional steps to guarantee their roadworthiness.

He noted that the Service intends to engage the State Transport Corporation (STC) as an independent body to conduct a comprehensive technical assessment of the vehicles.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr Owusu stressed the importance of ensuring that the ambulances are fit for purpose before any deployment.

For his part, Hon. Brogya Genfi underscored the need for due process to remain paramount, insisting that all steps taken must be transparent and in line with national standards.

He further reaffirmed government’s commitment to equipping the Ghana Armed Forces with quality medical transport facilities.

The Deputy Minister subsequently granted approval for the National Ambulance Service to engage the State Transport Corporation to undertake the technical assessment.
