Pastor Mensa Otabil, founder and leader of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has rebuked Christians who opposed the National Cathedral agenda of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, describing the attitude as stemming from “small-mindedness”.

He spoke at ICGC Christ Temple East in Teshie, Accra during the 2026 Greater Works programme organised by the church.

“Ghana wanted to build a national cathedral. Christians beat it up with their own mouth,” he said, pacing pensively on the podium.

Pastor Otabil contrasted the attitude of Christians with that of another religion he did not name in Ghana, observing that the group was more productive in its approach.

“Others are building things all over,” he said.

He said Christians, who constitute the super majority in Ghana, allowed politics to confuse and divide them instead of seeing the bigger picture.

“We are so small-minded, so small-minded that we allow politics to blind us. We allow politics to just crush our thinking,” he charged.

Despite withdrawing from the National Cathedral Board of Trustees in 2019, Pastor Otabil said he remained eager for the project to progress.

“We need to build massively to the glory of God,” he declared.

Ghana has a National Mosque at Kanda in Accra, which was completed with financial support from Turkish partners and commissioned in 2021. A grand Islamic edifice is also being developed at East Legon, reportedly financed by Saudi partners.
