A chieftaincy dispute within the Ga State has resurfaced following a viral social media video in which Nii Dr Tetteh Kwei II claims to be the rightful Ga Dzasetse.

In response, Nii Yaote Oto Ga II has issued a strong rebuttal, reaffirming his legitimacy and outlining a series of rulings and events that, according to him, confirm his position.

In a statement, Nii Yaote Oto Ga II emphasised that he was duly enstooled in accordance with Ga customary laws and traditions. He noted that his authority was demonstrated when he served as Chief Mourner during the funeral rites of the late Ga Mantse, Boni Nii Amugi II.

He further stated that he played a key role in the enstoolment of Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse II, who was subsequently gazetted by the National House of Chiefs in 2015.

Addressing the competing claim, Nii Yaote Oto Ga II referenced multiple arbitration outcomes that ruled in his favour. These include a decision by the GaDangme Council, chaired by the late Dr K.B. Asante, as well as a determination by an arbitration committee set up by the Ga Traditional Council under the joint leadership of Numo Akwaa Mensah III and Numo Ogbaamey III.

According to him, both bodies affirmed him as the rightful Ga Dzasetse, with the latter decision formally endorsed and publicly announced by the Ga Traditional Council.

He also cited a recent legal development, noting that on March 5, 2025, Nii Dr Tetteh Kwei I and Nii Tetteh Ashong V filed an application for committal for contempt against him at the High Court. However, the presiding judge, Justice John Bosco Nabarese, dismissed the application, ruling that the applicants failed to meet the required burden of proof.

Clarifying matters of traditional authority, Nii Yaote Oto Ga II stated that the Ga Paramount Stool Dzase does not have the mandate to install an Asafoatse, explaining that such authority rests with individual families, who only notify the Paramount Stool. He therefore dismissed any installations carried out under what he described as a “so-called Ga Paramount Dzase.”

He further noted that Asafoatse Okudjetuo II, enstooled on February 5, 2017, remains the legitimate office holder, stressing that there has been no destoolment or abdication.

Despite the ongoing dispute, Nii Yaote Oto Ga II called for calm among all parties, urging an amicable resolution as the matter remains before the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs for final determination.
