PAC orders district education officer in Sene East to refund GH₵18k in unearned salaries
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has instructed an official from the Sene East District Education Directorate to repay GH₵18,260.82 in salaries wrongly issued to a former employee of Bassa Senior High School within a 30-day period.
The directive stems from findings in a report by the Auditor-General’s Department, which uncovered irregular payments made to the school’s former Principal Superintendent, Isaac Okwanpah.
According to the report, Mr. Okwanpah continued to receive wages from November 2023 to February 2024 even after leaving his position.
School management informed the Committee that efforts to recover the funds from the former staff member have not been successful.
However, the Committee held the district officer who approved the payments accountable and ordered that the full amount be reimbursed within the stipulated timeframe.
The sitting, presided over by the Committee’s Ranking Member, Samuel Atta Mills, ruled that the officer must refund the money before taking steps to retrieve it from the former employee.
