Parliament has referred President John Dramani Mahama’s nominations of three persons to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court to the Appointments Committee for consideration.

The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, as well as former Ghana Bar Association President, Tony Forson.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin announced the nominations during the House’s emergency sitting on Monday, August 24, following the reading of a letter from President Mahama.

In the communication, the President explained that the three nominees had been selected to fill existing vacancies on the Supreme Court.

Speaker Bagbin subsequently tasked the Appointments Committee with scrutinising the nominees and presenting its report to the House within the period for which Parliament had been recalled.

He also directed that the substantive motions on the nominations be taken within the one-week duration of the emergency sitting.
