The Speaker of Parliament has called on Members of Parliament to uphold the highest standards of parliamentary conduct as the House convenes for an emergency sitting.

Addressing MPs at the opening of proceedings, the Speaker stressed the need for firmness in conviction without unnecessary acrimony and disagreement without disrespect.

He urged lawmakers to demonstrate vigour in their deliberations while avoiding actions that could obstruct the work of the House.

According to the Speaker Parliament must act whenever circumstances demand, emphasising the importance of the emergency sitting and the responsibility of members to conduct themselves appropriately.

He also welcomed MPs back to the House, thanking them for responding to the recall at relatively short notice.

“Honourable Members, when circumstances require Parliament to act, Parliament must so act. Honourable Members, I urge you during this emergency recall demonstrate the highest standards of parliamentary conduct, firmness of conviction without needless acrimony, disagreement without disrespect, and vigour today without obstruction.

Once again, I welcome honourable Members back to the House and I thank you for responding to the recall at relatively short notice. I also welcome members of the parliamentary press corps, officials of parliamentary service, our invited guests, and our fellow citizens following the proceedings from across the country and beyond. With these remarks, Honourable Members, you are formally welcome to this emergency sitting of Parliament. I thank you for your attention.”
