REGSEG pulls down illegal structures on Ramsar Site at Sakumono
Several unauthorised structures at the Sakumo Ramsar Site have been demolished as authorities step up action to safeguard the ecologically sensitive wetland and mitigate flooding in surrounding communities.
The exercise, which commenced on Tuesday, May 5, is being carried out by the Forestry Commission in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly.
Officials say the operation will run through Thursday, with all illegal developments within the protected core area expected to be removed.
Addressing the media during the exercise, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo reaffirmed government’s resolve to enforce environmental laws.
She warned the public against purchasing land in designated protected zones, noting that such transactions are unlawful.
Ms Ocloo also observed that some previously cleared structures had been reconstructed, describing the situation as a persistent challenge.
According to her, the ongoing operation is aimed at ensuring a total removal of encroachments within the core zone.
