Residents of Nwiso live in fear after armed attack
Residents of Nwiso in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region are living in fear following a violent attack by a group of armed men believed to be linked to a mining company and foreign nationals.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers, reportedly dressed as soldiers, stormed the community unexpectedly, burning motorbikes, destroying property and chasing residents who fled for safety. Some residents said they lost cash and other valuables during the incident.
During the attack, the Kyidomhene of the area was reportedly taken hostage. He was later released, but the incident has left both the traditional leader and residents shaken.
The Chief of Nwiso, Osabarima Yeboah Osei Hwedie II, condemned the incident and described it as unacceptable. He called on government and security agencies to intervene and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Tensions in the area have also been heightened by disputes over alleged mining activities. Residents have opposed attempts by Akroma Gold Company Limited to operate in the community, accusing the company of forceful entry and intimidation.
The Akwansera Hene of Akyem Kotoku, Oberempong Kwame Akomeah, has called on the company to compensate affected residents and urged authorities to strengthen security to prevent further incidents.
Residents say they remain fearful and are calling for immediate intervention to restore calm in the community.
