The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constiteuncy in the Greater Accra Region, Samuel Nartey George, has questioned the role of the Ghana AIDS Commission(GAC) in HIV prevention efforts, alleging that some of its officials have engaged with pro-LGBTQ groups.

Speaking during deliberations on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill on Thursday, April 23, Mr. George claimed the Commission had distributed lubricants to such groups, raising concerns about whether this aligns with its core mandate.

“We have evidence of Ghana AIDS Commission officers meeting with pro-LGBTQ groups and giving them lubricants,” he said, questioning the rationale behind the move in the context of HIV prevention.

Mr. George, who is a leading sponsor of the bill, argued that if confirmed, such actions could conflict with the Commission’s primary objective of combating HIV and AIDS.

He further suggested that public health resources should be prioritised toward more pressing healthcare needs, including maternal care.

The Ghana AIDS Commission has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.

The remarks have added to ongoing national debate surrounding public health strategies, human rights, and legislative efforts related to LGBTQ+ issues in Ghana.
