The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has rejected claims that LGBTQIA+ issues are not a priority for Ghanaians.

"This is priority for us," he said in a media interview.

"Any country worth its salt can deal with multiple priorities at the same time."

He argued that addressing one national concern does not prevent government from tackling others, citing infrastructure and healthcare challenges as examples.

"We are not saying we should stop building schools because we do not have enough pipe-borne water flowing through our taps," he emphasised.

"We are dealing with our roads, hospitals, schools, water, we will also deal with our family values. It remains a priority for me as the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, the people voted for me - and that was o'ne of the reasons. It's why they increased my vote margin from 69 per cent to 74 per cent. They said to me, 'Go back to Parliament and make sure this is done'."

His comments come after President John Dramani Mahama, during a recent engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), suggested that the LGBTQIA+ issue is not a priority for most Ghanaians at this time.

Samuel Nartey George, also known as Dzata, further referenced a case involving an alleged British-Ghanaian gay man who reportedly kept a 21-year-old away from his father for three weeks. He said the situation required collaboration between his ministry and the Criminal Investigation Department to locate and rescue the individual.

According to him, there are similar incidents, and greater public awareness would help people understand the importance he places on the matter.

He reiterated his position on protecting "the innocence of our children, and our family values".

Although the anti-LGBTQIA+ bill has been passed by Parliament, it is yet to receive presidential assent.
