Seven illegal miners confirmed dead after pit collapse at Domi Keniago
Seven illegal miners have died following the collapse of a mining pit at Domi Keniago in the Amansie South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The victims were among eight miners who became trapped underground while reportedly engaged in illegal mining activities in search of gold.
Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing for the eighth miner, who remains trapped beneath the collapsed pit.
Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Security Council (DISEC) and the Ghana Police Service are leading efforts to recover the remaining victim.
The incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Thursday when the mining pit suddenly caved in while the miners were working underground.
Initial information indicates that about 12 people were at the mining site at the time of the incident.
Four miners managed to escape the collapse while the other eight were trapped.
The circumstances that led to the collapse have not yet been established with authorities expected to investigate the incident and determine what caused the pit to cave in.
Amansie South Municipal Chief Executive, Benjamin Marfo, told Class News that he was heading to the site with officials to obtain further details and assess the situation.
He said authorities were working to establish exactly what happened and coordinate the ongoing recovery operation.
The bodies of the seven deceased miners have since been retrieved and conveyed to a morgue, as efforts continue to locate and recover the final victim.
