Catholic priest Father Andrew Campbell has praised NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for what he described as his empathy towards needy and sick people.

Father Campbell said Dr Bawumia’s concern for vulnerable people was evident during his visit to the Weija Leprosarium, where he interacted with patients.

“Dr Bawumia has that empathy towards needy and sick people. I’ve noticed it in the way he interacts when he comes and meets all those who had leprosy,” he said.

“Today, you saw him; he shook hands with everybody, hugged them and shook hands with them. He’s helping so many people because he has love for humanity,” Father Campbell added.

His comments followed Dr Bawumia’s visit to St. Jude Catholic Church at Weija, where the NPP flagbearer donated GH¢50,000 to support the church’s operations.

Dr Bawumia was also honoured during a Holy Mass in recognition of his contributions to the church and commissioned a newly constructed eight-seater washroom facility with disability-friendly features.

He had previously supported the construction of the church, including the washroom facility.

Speaking after the ceremony, Dr Bawumia said his support for the church was partly influenced by Father Campbell’s work with vulnerable people.

“Father Campbell is an extraordinary person. He’s a true man of God, and he cares about the poor, the needy, the hungry, the lepers, the street children, the sick, and this is something I also care deeply about,” he said.

Dr Bawumia said he agreed to support the completion of the church after seeing the work being undertaken by Father Campbell.

“So when he told me, when I came to see that he was putting up this church, I said, ‘Father, I will help you to complete this church,’ and provided the required resources. I’m so happy to see the church today. It is very beautiful,” he added.
