Teacher Recruitment: We can only clear 7,000 for now – Haruna Iddrisu
Africa Education Watch is urging the government to release a comprehensive deployment plan for the 7,000 teachers recently announced, with clear district-level allocations to guide their placement.
The group says improved transparency is essential to guarantee a fair distribution of teachers nationwide, particularly in underserved areas.
Addressing a press briefing on education policy monitoring, Executive Director Kofi Asare called on the Ministers for Education and Finance to work together to secure additional resources to support transfer grants for teachers.
He also indicated that the organisation plans to file a Right to Information request to obtain details on how many of the newly recruited teachers will be assigned to deprived communities.
“In line with the president’s directive on decentralised teacher postings, we call for transparency in the recruitment and deployment of teachers. The GES, pursuant to this, must publish a teacher posting plan indicating the quotas being distributed to all teacher-deprived districts that are receiving the 7,000 teachers.
“This will form the basis of civil society and media monitoring of distributive efficiency at the district level and provide us with an opportunity to give feedback to the Ministry for Education to ensure that there is effectiveness in policy implementation.
“EduWatch is going to submit an RTI to GES to request this data and enable our partner NGOs across rural Ghana to monitor deployment using the quotas assigned to every district. We are going to monitor every teacher deployed up to the school level and report to the ministry.”
