Tensions flare at PAC sitting as Sam George clashes with committee chair over MTN service concerns
A tense moment unfolded at Monday’s sitting of the Public Accounts Committee as Minister for Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, engaged in a heated exchange with Committee Chairperson Abena Osei-Asare during discussions on telecommunications service delivery and concerns involving MTN Ghana.
The disagreement began after the Minister linked current challenges in the telecommunications sector to what he described as weak policy direction, governance failures and leadership shortcomings under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
Midway through his submission, the Committee Chairperson interrupted and cautioned the Minister against making comments she considered inappropriate, urging him to remain focused on the matter under discussion.
Her intervention sparked a sharp reaction from Mr. George, who appealed to Ranking Member Samuel Atta-Mills, who was presiding over the sitting at the time, to intervene.
The Minister accused the Chairperson of being disruptive and attempting to interfere with his response before the Committee.
However, Madam Osei-Asare defended her actions, explaining that her remarks were intended to maintain order and ensure that proceedings remained relevant and focused.
She denied suggestions that she was attempting to obstruct the Minister during his presentation.
