NEIP CEO backs Rent Control's intervention over rising hostel prices
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Eric Adjei, has joined growing concerns over rising hostel accommodation costs across tertiary institutions in Ghana.
Commenting on the issue, Mr. Adjei expressed support for students who have been speaking out against what they describe as excessive and arbitrary increases in hostel prices by some private hostel operators on tertiary campuses across the country.
According to him, while hostel authorities have the right to manage their facilities, there is a need for fairness and moderation in pricing to ensure students are not overburdened financially.
He argued that the situation has reached a point where the Rent Control Commission should intervene to help protect students and promote reasonable accommodation charges on campuses.
Mr. Adjei noted that affordable accommodation remains an important part of the academic experience and urged stakeholders to work towards solutions that would make campus life more comfortable for students.
Mr Adjei's comments come amid increasing public debate over rising hostel fees in several tertiary institutions across the country, with many students and parents calling for stronger regulatory oversight.
