Transport fares likely to increase if fuel costs rise — GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union has indicated that transport fares may go up if fuel prices increase, cautioning commuters to prepare for possible adjustments in lorry charges.

Speaking in an interview on March 15, the union’s Industrial Relations Officer, Abass Imoro, said some drivers had earlier tried to increase fares on their own due to rising operating expenses. However, the union stepped in to reverse those changes and ensure that the officially approved fares were maintained.

He explained that transport operators had expected the recent weakening of the dollar to reduce the cost of some essential inputs, especially lubricants, but prices have largely remained the same, continuing to place financial pressure on drivers.

Mr Imoro noted that if fuel prices rise, it would likely trigger a review of transport fares.

Even so, he assured commuters that the union would not immediately announce new fares, explaining that the leadership would first observe market trends before making any decision.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Duncan Amoah, has warned that petrol and diesel prices could climb to between 13 and 15 cedis per litre. He attributed the expected increase to supply disruptions linked to tensions in parts of the Middle East.
