The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Promise Yayra Asamani, for allegedly publishing false information about a ride-hailing driver on social media.

The arrest was carried out by the Police Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following a complaint lodged by Selasie Kwaku Anthonio, a 43-year-old driver, over a viral Snapchat post that falsely described him as a “murderer and a thief.”

According to the police, the post, which included the complainant’s photograph and vehicle registration number, also alleged that he used signal jammers to disrupt passengers’ network connectivity and carried offensive weapons.

Mr. Anthonio reported the matter on March 11, 2026, after becoming aware of the post a day earlier through a relative.

He told police that the publication led to distressing calls from family members and customers, while his account with Uber was subsequently blocked, affecting his livelihood.

He also expressed fear for his safety due to potential public backlash.

Investigations led to the arrest of Stephanie Asamani on March 13, 2026, at her residence at Spintex in Accra.

During interrogation, she told police that she had booked a ride with the complainant on March 9, 2026, from Spintex to Oyibi.

She alleged that during the trip, the driver requested a change of drop-off location and made a phone call in which he said he was “bringing the goods to the location.”

She further claimed she noticed a rag and a hammer in the vehicle and that a verbal altercation ensued when the driver stopped near the Toyota Motors Roundabout, prompting her to end the trip.

Police say Stephanie later shared her experience and a screenshot of the driver’s profile with her younger sister, Promise Yayra Asamani, who subsequently authored and published the viral post on March 11.

According to investigators, the suspect failed to honour a police invitation on March 12, leading to her arrest on March 14.

During questioning, Promise Yayra Asamani admitted to publishing the post based solely on her sister’s account and acknowledged that she had no evidence to support the allegations.

She has since been granted police enquiry bail on March 16, 2026, while investigations continue.

The police have cautioned the public against the publication of false information, noting that such actions are punishable under the laws of Ghana
