Weija Dam Spillage: hundreds of homes submerged
Hundreds of houses in sections of Weija have been inundated following a controlled release of water from the Weija Dam, forcing many residents to evacuate their homes.
The flooding follows confirmation by Ghana Water Limited that excess water was being discharged from the dam after water levels exceeded safe operational limits, raising fears of a possible overflow.
In a statement issued on May 27, 2026, the company explained that the water level at the dam had risen beyond 48 feet, compelling authorities to open all spill gates to protect the integrity of the facility.
According to GWL, the controlled spillage forms part of standard safety measures undertaken during periods of heavy rainfall when inflows into the dam increase significantly.
The exercise has, however, led to severe flooding in nearby communities, with many residents displaced and others scrambling to rescue belongings as floodwaters submerged homes and roads.
Authorities are expected to intensify emergency response operations as assessments continue on the scale of destruction and support required for affected residents.
