The Akatsi District Police Command has commenced investigations into an alleged attempted murder and unlawful destruction of property following a violent disturbance at Deti, a suburb of Akatsi in the Volta Region.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, May 27, reportedly resulted in the shooting of two persons and the destruction of several properties, including vehicles and a fence wall.

According to a press release issued and signed by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado of the Public Affairs Unit of the Volta Regional Police Command, the victims, identified as James Kpanda, 44, and Jonathan Kpanda, 30, sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.

Police preliminary investigations indicate that at about 10:30 AM on the day of the incident, a group of young men, including the two victims, allegedly stormed the residence of one Mensah Awagah and reportedly began pulling down his fence wall.

The action is said to have provoked the suspect, who allegedly retrieved a firearm from his room and fired at the group. James Kpanda reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the knee, while Jonathan Kpanda suffered an injury to the eye.

The incident subsequently escalated as some angry youth allegedly went on a rampage and set ablaze a Mercedes-Benz private vehicle and two motorbikes parked within the suspect’s residence.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were reportedly called to the scene to contain the fire. However, before their arrival, the vehicle and motorbikes had been burnt beyond recognition.

Police confirmed that Mensah Awagah is currently in custody assisting with investigations, while the injured victims are receiving treatment at the Akatsi District Hospital.

Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities have launched a manhunt for other suspects believed to have been involved in the disturbance to support ongoing investigations.

Police assured the public that further updates on the case would be communicated in due course.
