The Arrested Suspects

The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven persons believed to be part of a robbery network linked to a series of attacks in Accra, Tema, Anyinam, Kumasi and Takoradi.

According to police, the suspects are connected to multiple robbery incidents in which victims were allegedly dispossessed of large sums of money, gold and mercury.

Investigations were launched after an Ivorian businessman, Mousa Bamba, reported that he had been deceived into travelling to Dzorwulu under the guise of purchasing six kilograms of gold worth approximately 450,000 US dollars.

Police say the suspects allegedly posed as personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department and the military before robbing the investor at gunpoint and escaping.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Tuesday, May 26, police disclosed that initial investigations led to the arrest of Mohammed Umaro, also known as Alhaji, and Gabriel Sewornu, popularly called Dangote.

Further enquiries reportedly linked two military officers — Lance Corporal Eugene Akurugu and Lance Corporal Emmanuel Arko, also known as Bullet — as well as three police officers identified as Inspector Richmond Osei, Corporal Gideon Anor and Lance Corporal Felix Deku Tetteyga to the alleged criminal operation.

The Police Service said the officers involved have since been interdicted pending the outcome of investigations.

Authorities also disclosed that intelligence-led operations carried out on May 23 and 24 by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police led to the arrest of additional suspects, including Justin Oduro, alias Don King or Mafia, Clement Gyasi and Farouk Zakari.

All the suspects remain in police custody assisting with investigations, while security agencies continue efforts to track down other persons believed to be connected to the syndicate.
