Weija-Gbawe MP calls for urgent government support as Weija dam spillage displaces residents
The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called for urgent government support for residents displaced by flooding following the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, May 28, the MP described the situation in several communities within the constituency as devastating, with homes and businesses still submerged in floodwaters.
According to him, many residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, while others continue to struggle to remain safe amid the flooding.
“I have spent the last three days moving through floodwaters, assisting residents to evacuate. The situation is extremely difficult. Weija-Gbawe is in distress,” he told Parliament.
The flooding followed the opening of all five spill gates of the Weija Dam as part of efforts to regulate rising water levels and protect the structural integrity of the dam.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says at least 85 affected residents have been relocated to designated shelters for their safety.
