UE/R: Police arrest man, 27, for possession of assault rifle in Bawku
The Ghana Police Service in the Upper East Region has taken custody of a suspect arrested for unlawful possession of an assault rifle in Bawku.
The suspect, Abdul Basit, aged 27, was arrested on April 13, 2026, at Sakabo, a suburb of Bawku, by a military patrol team during an operation in the area.
According to police, the patrol team heard gunshots and moved to the location, where the suspect was seen running into a room. He was pursued and arrested.
A search conducted in the room led to the retrieval of an AK-47 assault rifle with 31 rounds of ammunition.
Police said the suspect admitted ownership of the weapon during interrogation.
He is currently in custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be put before court.
