GES warns schools against unauthorised fee collection
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a formal warning to schools nationwide regarding the unauthorised collection of fees, stating that no institution has been granted permission to charge levies under any circumstances.
In a statement released on Wednesday, May 6, the service clarified that it has not sanctioned any school to collect money from students or parents under any name or form, and urged the public to dismiss reports to the contrary.
The directive was prompted by growing concerns and claims that some institutions have been imposing additional charges, specifically cited as feeding fees.
The GES characterised these claims as misleading and emphasized that any school engaging in such practices is acting unlawfully and without the approval of management.
Furthermore, the service reaffirmed the government's commitment to the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy, noting that the initiative is designed to remove financial barriers to secondary education.
The GES stated that the policy remains fully operational and that efforts are being made to enhance its effectiveness.
Authorities warned that any attempt to undermine the programme through misinformation or the imposition of illegal fees would be considered contrary to the national interest.
Parents and students who are asked to pay such fees have been encouraged to report the incidents to the Ghana Education Service for investigation and disciplinary action.
