The Ministry of Health has scaled up and introduced new Post-Basic Specialised Nursing Programmes to address the growing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Ghana and strengthen domestic healthcare delivery.

The initiative forms part of efforts to support the government’s flagship healthcare intervention, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), and complement the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme amid rising migration of specialised health professionals.

According to the Ministry, the introduction of the specialised programmes is aimed at equipping nurses with advanced clinical competencies to improve patient outcomes, particularly in managing conditions such as heart diseases, diabetes, cancer, kidney failure and other chronic illnesses.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Desmond Boateng, Chief Director, for the Minister of Health.

The new specialised areas include Critical Care Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Cardiology Nursing, Nephrology Nursing, Endocrinology Nursing, and Oncology Nursing.

The Ministry stated that the programme is designed to meet international standards and will provide applicants with advanced clinical skills, leadership training, and improved remuneration prospects within Ghana’s healthcare system.

Training will be fully supported by the Ministry of Health, with access to modern skills laboratories, upgraded libraries, and expert faculty.

Graduates of the programme will receive a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree from the University of Cape Coast and will be eligible for Associate Membership with the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, as well as licensure from the Nursing and Midwifery Council - Ghana.

The duration of training is four semesters and will be intensive and clinically focused.

The Ministry announced that the online admission portal will be open from March 3 to March 26, 2026.

Applications are to be submitted through the health training portal at a cost of GHS150.00.

Under the programme, Emergency Nursing will be offered at NMTC–Tamale and the Peri-Operative/Critical Care School (PON/CCN) at Korle-Bu.

Cardiology Nursing will be available at the same Korle-Bu school and NMTC–Kumasi.

Nephrology Nursing will be offered at EN&T School, Kumasi and NMTC–Korle-Bu.

Endocrinology Nursing will be available at NMTC–Kumasi and NMTC–Korle-Bu, while Oncology Nursing will be offered at NMTC–Korle-Bu and EN&T School, Kumasi.

Critical Care Nursing will be run at the Peri-Operative/Critical Care School, Korle-Bu and NMTC–Kumasi.

Applicants must be medically fit, not more than 40 years old, and possess a Diploma in Registered General Nursing, Midwifery, or Registered Mental Health Nursing.

They must have completed their mandatory one-year rotation or national service and have at least two years of work experience in their area of interest.

A valid Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Nursing and Midwifery Council is also required.

The Ministry noted that applicants who meet the admission requirements will be invited for a competitive interview at their chosen institution.
