Dyslexia Ghana calls for greater national awareness and support for learners who think differently

For many children in Ghana, difficulties with reading, spelling and writing are still too often mistaken for laziness, poor behaviour or a lack of intelligence.

Every day, bright and capable learners struggle in silence because their learning differences remain unidentified and unsupported.

For more than 25 years, Dyslexia Ghana has been working to change that reality.

As one of Ghana’s leading organisations dedicated to dyslexia and other learning differences, Dyslexia Ghana has become a trusted source of hope for children, families, teachers and schools across the country. Through assessment, intervention, advocacy and professional training, the organisation is helping to build a future where every learner has the opportunity to succeed.

According to the British Dyslexia Association, approximately one in every ten people has dyslexia. Despite this, many children continue to go unidentified, often resulting in years of frustration, low self-esteem and underachievement.

Yet dyslexia is not a measure of intelligence.

Many people with dyslexia possess remarkable strengths in creativity, innovation, problem-solving, entrepreneurship and leadership when provided with appropriate teaching and support.

“Dyslexia does not mean a child cannot learn. It simply means they learn differently.”

A Mission Born from Experience

Leading this movement is Joy Thomas, Founder and Executive Director of Dyslexia Ghana.

Drawing upon both professional expertise and lived experience, Joy has dedicated more than twenty-five years to transforming the lives of individuals with dyslexia and other learning differences throughout Ghana and beyond.

A Licensed Davis (R) Dyslexia Facilitator, Educational Psychologist, educator and international advocate for inclusive education, she has worked with thousands of children, parents, teachers and educational institutions to improve understanding and create opportunities for learners who think differently.

Speaking about the organisation’s mission, Joy Thomas said: “Every child deserves the opportunity to discover their strengths. Dyslexia should never prevent anyone from receiving a quality education or achieving their dreams. When we identify learning differences early and provide the right support, we unlock incredible potential.”

Changing Lives Through Practical Support

Dyslexia Ghana provides a wide range of specialist services including:

* Dyslexia screening and comprehensive diagnostic assessments

* Individual literacy intervention programmes

* Teacher training and professional development

* Parent education and family support

* School consultancy and inclusive education advice

* Examination access arrangement assessments

* Workplace dyslexia awareness training

* Public education and advocacy campaigns

The organisation works alongside schools, parents, employers and communities to ensure that learning differences are recognised early and supported appropriately.

Real Stories, Real Transformation

Behind every assessment is a child whose confidence has been restored.

Parents frequently describe children who once feared reading aloud but now volunteer confidently in class.

Teachers report learners who had been labelled as “slow” becoming engaged, motivated and successful once teaching methods were adapted to suit their learning needs.

Adults who struggled throughout their education have finally received explanations for lifelong challenges, enabling them to rebuild confidence and pursue further education or employment.

These stories represent more than improved literacy—they represent transformed lives.

Building Inclusive Schools Across Ghana

Recognising that teachers are central to educational success, Dyslexia Ghana delivers professional training programmes for schools, universities and educational institutions.

These programmes equip educators with practical skills to identify learning differences, adapt classroom teaching, implement reasonable accommodations and create environments where every learner can thrive.

The organisation believes that inclusive education benefits all learners—not only those with dyslexia.

Looking Towards the Future

As Dyslexia Ghana celebrates twenty-five years of service, its vision continues to grow.

Plans are underway to establish the Dyslexia Ghana Special Functionality Centre—a pioneering centre of excellence that will provide:

* Specialist education

* Assessment and intervention services

* Teacher training and professional development

* Vocational and life skills programmes

* Family support services

* Research and innovation

* Community outreach

* Inclusive recreational and therapeutic facilities

The centre aims to become a national and regional hub for neurodiversity, supporting not only Ghana but the wider West African region.

A National Call to Action

Dyslexia Ghana is calling on government agencies, educational institutions, corporate organisations, development partners and communities to work together to ensure that no child is left behind because they learn differently.

Greater awareness, early identification and evidence-based intervention have the power to change lives.

As Ghana continues to strengthen inclusive education, Dyslexia Ghana remains committed to ensuring that every learner is given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

“Dyslexia has no uniform. It affects people from every background, community and profession. With understanding, appropriate support and inclusive teaching, every individual can learn, work and succeed.”
