Mahama assures timely completion of La General Hospital, announces measures to tackle ‘No-Bed Syndrome’

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on the reconstruction of the La General Hospital, assuring that government will ensure the project is completed on schedule.

According to the President, construction is progressing steadily, with the contractor projecting completion by November 2027. He emphasised the critical importance of the facility, noting that its absence has placed pressure on major hospitals, including the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, LEKMA Hospital, and the Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital, where patients have had to seek care since the demolition of the old structure.

President Mahama disclosed that the new hospital will provide an additional 160 beds, helping to ease the persistent challenge of limited bed space, particularly during emergencies.

He also revealed that government has terminated the contract for the Police Hospital project, with plans to re-award it to ensure its swift completion and further expand healthcare capacity.

Touching on emergency care, the President acknowledged ongoing difficulties patients face in accessing hospital beds, especially at night.

To address this, he announced plans to repurpose the emergency centre established at Burma Camp during the COVID-19 pandemic into a dedicated emergency facility.

The centre, he explained, will serve as a stabilisation point for patients before they are transferred to other hospitals.

President Mahama noted that the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Health to address the “no-bed syndrome” and reduce preventable deaths across the country.
