President John Dramani Mahama has praised the Ghana Medical Trsut Fund (GMTF)for the rapid progress of work on the cardiology centre under construction at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, describing the project as a major boost to healthcare delivery in northern Ghana.

During a site inspection, the President noted that the facility represents a transformative step toward ensuring equitable access to specialised healthcare services, particularly in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

The state-of-the-art centre is expected to house advanced medical technology and skilled cardiologists, providing a full range of services, including critical procedures such as angioplasty and pacemaker implantation.

President Mahama expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for their support in advancing what he described as a vital intervention.

He explained that the project would significantly reduce the burden on patients from the five northern regions and neighbouring countries, who often travel long distances to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for specialised cardiac care.

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, also commended the President for his leadership in initiating the project, noting its importance in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.

Meanwhile, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, assured that construction is on track for completion by August.

She further highlighted the President’s decision to upgrade the project from a catheterisation laboratory to a full cardiology centre, enabling the facility to handle more complex cases.

When completed, the Tamale Cardiology Centre is expected to improve access to advanced, life-saving cardiac care for millions of people in northern Ghana.
