A senior lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at University of Cape Coast in the Central Region, Dr Kasim Abdulai, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for introducing the Free Primary Healthcare programme, describing it as a timely and people-centered policy.

Speaking on the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra FM 100.5 FM on April 17, 2026, Dr. Abdulai praised the government for aligning with global efforts aimed at improving access to primary healthcare.

According to him, Free Primary Healthcare is a widely accepted global policy direction, with many countries encouraged to adopt systems that ensure citizens have access to essential health services without financial burden.

Dr. Abdulai noted that one of the most commendable aspects of the programme is the incorporation of nutrition, which he described as central to improving public health outcomes.

He emphasised that many illnesses affecting people today are closely linked to poor lifestyle choices and unhealthy eating habits.

“The food we eat plays a major role in our health. A lot of the sicknesses we see today are a result of poor dieting and unhealthy lifestyles,” he explained.

The nutrition expert further praised President Mahama’s advice on healthy diets, stating that it reflects a strong understanding of preventive healthcare.

He stressed the need for Ghanaians to take nutrition seriously, as proper eating habits can help prevent diseases and improve overall well-being.

Dr. Abdulai concluded that the inclusion of nutrition in the Free Primary Healthcare Programme is a “wise step” that will contribute significantly to disease prevention and national health improvement.
