A/R: ECG to upgrade Kumasi Ridge substation transformer

News
Power cuts

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has scheduled a major transformer upgrade at the Kumasi Ridge Substation to improve power reliability and service within the area. The maintenance work is set to take place from Wednesday, May 6, to Saturday, May 9, 2026. Project Details and Scope

This upgrade is a component of the government’s Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme, designed to reduce pressure on the distribution network and strengthen infrastructure. The project involves replacing the existing 20/26MVA power transformer with a higher-capacity 30/39MVA unit.

The Kumasi Ridge project follows the completion of similar upgrades at several other locations, including the Adenta, Nmai Dzorm, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua Primary Substations.

Impact on Customers

To facilitate safe engineering work, customers in the Kumasi Ridge catchment area will experience scheduled, phased power interruptions over the four-day period.

ECG indicated that affected groups should expect outages lasting approximately six hours, depending on the specific daily work schedule.

Expected Benefits

The utility company expects the upgrade to deliver several long-term improvements, including:

- Increased supply capacity for the Kumasi Ridge area.

- Reduction in system overloads and equipment failures.

- Minimization of the frequency and duration of future outages.

- Improved voltage stability.

ECG stated that detailed outage schedules will be shared through its official communication channels.

The company acknowledged the inconvenience of the temporary interruptions while emphasizing that the project is necessary for sustained infrastructure improvement and proactive maintenance of the power distribution network.
