Ablakwa cancels planned airport 'flamboyant' welcome by Foreign Affairs staff
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, has directed the immediate cancellation of a planned welcome ceremony organised by the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration ahead of his arrival in the country after the United Nations declaration of the slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.
In a statement shared on his social media platform, Mr. Ablakwa said he had become aware of arrangements by the Ministry staff to stage a surprise reception at the Accra International Airport to mark what they described as a significant national achievement.
According to him, checks with management revealed that such welcome ceremonies are a long-standing tradition within the Ministry, often organised to celebrate major accomplishments and proud moments for the country.
However, the Minister said he had instructed that the planned event be cancelled, noting that he would have opposed the idea had he been consulted beforehand.
“This is not a personal victory, and besides, there is more work ahead of us,” he stated.
Mr. Ablakwa expressed appreciation to the Ministry’s management and staff for the gesture, while emphasising the need to remain focused on national service.
He also commended the dedication of staff at the Ministry, describing them as dynamic and talented, and called for continued efforts to advance Ghana’s interests on the global stage.
The Minister further invoked national unity and progress, expressing optimism about Ghana’s continued achievements under the leadership of John Mahama.
