The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson, has expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama, stating that LGBTQ-related legislation should not be treated as a national priority at this time.

Speaking on Ahotor FM on April 11, Mr. Koomson argued that Ghana is currently faced with more pressing economic and social challenges that require urgent attention.

He stressed that while discussions around LGBTQ issues may continue, they should not overshadow key national concerns such as taxation, job creation, and economic transformation.

“Our focus should be on fixing the economy and improving livelihoods,” he said, adding that government policies must prioritise the well-being of citizens.

Mr. Koomson noted that LGBTQ matters can be addressed through appropriate legal frameworks when necessary but cautioned against allowing the issue to dominate the national agenda.

He further urged the President to assess any proposed legislation on its merits when formally presented, rather than responding to political pressure.

The labour leader also accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to use the issue to divert attention from more critical governance concerns.

He maintained that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) should remain focused on delivering economic results, noting that this would ultimately shape public confidence and electoral success.

Mr. Koomson concluded that prioritising economic stability and development remains key to addressing the broader needs of the country.
