A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Razak Kojo Opoku, has dismissed the prospects of emerging political movements breaking Ghana’s long-standing two-party dominance.

According to him, it is both “practically and theoretically impossible” for alternative political groups such as “The Base” or “Butterfly” to outperform the two main parties — the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress — in the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Opoku argued that Ghana’s political landscape remains firmly rooted in a duopoly, where the NPP and NDC continue to command the largest voter bases nationwide.

He noted that attempts by smaller or breakaway groups to challenge this structure have historically failed to gain significant electoral traction.

He therefore called on aggrieved or disillusioned members of the NPP to return and contribute to rebuilding a stronger and more united party ahead of the next election cycle.

According to him, unity within the party will be critical in positioning the NPP as a formidable force in the 2028 polls.

His comments come amid the unveiling of the Base Movement led by Dr Oti Bonsu in a Facebook post on Monday April 20.
