The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has disclosed that government released a total of GHS 5 billion to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in 2025, marking a significant increase compared to GHS 362 million disbursed in 2024.

According to the Minister, the funds were released in a structured quarterly breakdown to support development projects across the country.

The first quarter saw a disbursement of GHS 790.37 million, followed by GHS 1.46 billion in the second quarter, GHS 1.18 billion in the third quarter, and GHS 1.59 billion in the fourth quarter.

He explained that the timely and substantial release of funds enabled MMDAs to undertake key infrastructure projects aimed at improving living conditions in local communities.

He made this revelation at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House in Accra.

As part of the directive tied to the disbursement, each Assembly was required to construct at least two Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, three classroom blocks, and 10 boreholes, while also completing ongoing legacy projects.

Additionally, 25 percent of the Common Fund was allocated towards the construction of 24-hour economy model markets.

The Minister noted that the impact of the increased funding is already evident, with hundreds of projects currently underway nationwide.

He revealed that 494 CHPS compounds, 761 classroom blocks, 4,029 boreholes, and 2,755 legacy projects are at various stages of completion.

Furthermore, he indicated that contracts have been awarded for the construction of 261 24-hour economy model markets, with work already progressing on several of them.

Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim emphasized that the government remains committed to accelerating grassroots development and ensuring that resources are efficiently utilized to improve service delivery and infrastructure at the local level.
