The leader and chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, says women continue to face major obstacles when they attempt to rise in Ghana’s political landscape.

Speaking on the JoyNews programme The Pulse on March 9 in connection with International Women's Day, Ms Nabla said intimidation, stereotypes and structural barriers within political parties often discourage women from seeking leadership roles.

According to her, although parties frequently claim to promote women’s participation, many limit that encouragement to positions such as women’s organiser rather than top leadership roles like chairman or general secretary.

She added that even when women hold positions within party structures, they are sometimes expected to perform traditional duties rather than participate fully in decision-making.

Ms Nabla argued that such attitudes reinforce stereotypes that push women into unpaid or supportive roles instead of positions of authority.

She also recounted personal challenges she has faced since entering politics, including insults, attacks on her reputation and encounters with law enforcement.

According to her, she had never previously been to court or a police station but has been arrested three times since joining politics, describing some of the incidents as attempts to discourage her from remaining active in the political space.

Despite these challenges, Ms Nabla maintained that such experiences reflect the broader difficulties many women face when trying to break into leadership positions in Ghanaian politics.
