Mireku Duker distances himself From Bawumia running mate speculation
Former Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency in the Western Region,Mr George Mireku Duker, has distanced himself from growing speculation linking him to the position of running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections.
His response follows a statement issued by a group calling itself “Western Youth for Progress,” which reportedly appealed to the NPP’s 2028 Presidential Candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, to consider him for the running mate position.
In a statement dated May 14, 2026, Mr. Mireku Duker expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by the group but stressed that the selection of a running mate remains the sole prerogative of the party’s flagbearer.
He described the publication by the group as speculative and urged party supporters not to treat it with any seriousness.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I am not participating in any contest or speculative tendencies concerning the position of a Running Mate,” he stated.
The former Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources explained that his immediate priority is to reclaim the Tarkwa-Nsuaem parliamentary seat for the NPP in the 2028 elections.
According to him, his focus remains on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures, promoting unity within the constituency, and positioning the NPP for victory in the next general elections.
Mr. Mireku Duker further cautioned party faithful against distractions and premature discussions over matters that fall exclusively within the discretion of the flagbearer.
“At this crucial moment, our collective attention must be devoted to unifying the rank and file of our party,” he stated.
He also expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and judgment, saying he believes the former Vice President will make decisions that best serve the interest of the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
Mr. Mireku Duker concluded by urging members and supporters of the NPP to remain focused, united and committed to strengthening the party for future electoral success.
