NDC operative slams Mahama appointees over 'arrogance' and neglect of grassroots
James Agbey, an outspoken operative of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has fiercely criticised some government appointees, accusing them of showing arrogance, disrespect, and disdain toward the party's grassroots supporters.
In a sharply worded press statement, Mr Agbey claimed that many appointees serving under the administration of John Mahama had transformed into “demigods” who treat party footsoldiers with contempt after taking office.
“As a longstanding operative, active and loyal member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), I am infuriated by the continuous disdainful attitude of government appointees towards NDC grassroots membership and footsoldiers,” Agbey stated.
'Arrogance Beyond Belief'
Mr Agbey argued that political appointees owe their positions directly to the sacrifices and hard work of party activists. Because of this, he insists they must remain accessible and respectful to the rank-and-file membership.
“Therefore, the assertion by some of these appointees that they are in office to serve Ghana and not NDC footsoldiers is arrogance beyond belief,” he noted.
The operative singled out the boss of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kwesi Afrey Biney, accusing him of repeatedly turning away party supporters who seek an audience with him.
“Who told this ingrate that he would be serving as SSNIT boss if NDC was still languishing in opposition?” Agbey questioned.
Forgotten Sacrifices
According to Mr Agbey, several appointees have quickly forgotten the crucial role grassroots members played in returning the party to power. He alleged that these officials are now “feeding fat on the sweat of ordinary party people.”
He warned that the growing frustration brewing among the party's base could severely damage the public image of both the government and the NDC if it is left unchecked.
“The arrogance and disdain must stop, and it must stop now,” he stressed.
A Reminder of Mahama’s Pledge
To back his demands, Mr. Agbey invoked President Mahama’s inaugural message delivered during his investiture on January 7, 2025, where the President explicitly cautioned his team against official hubris.
“President Mahama’s message on his investiture was clear: ‘I’ll not tolerate disrespect and arrogance in my government,’” Agbey recalled.
He urged all current appointees to immediately adopt humility, tolerance, and openness in their daily dealings with both the general public and party faithful.
“By every standard of civility, culture, and political hierarchy, the grassroots deserves a respectful and dignified reception whenever they call on any of President Mahama’s appointees,” he added.
Mr Agbey concluded his statement by calling on all loyal party members to speak up boldly against what he described as a trend of “dangerous intolerance” emerging within government circles.
