Razak Kojo Opoku urges Ntim Fordjour to take note of ‘smuggled clauses’ in Anti-LGBTQ Bill to review when NPP returns to office in 20209
The Founder and President of the UP Tradition Institute, Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, has called on Assin South Member of Parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, to take note of what he described as “smuggled amendments and clauses” in the newly passed anti-LGBTQ bill.
In a statement shared on his Facebook wall on May 30, 2026, Dr. Opoku argued that the alleged amendments could later be removed through parliamentary processes if the Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) return to power after the 2028 general elections.
According to him, future NPP Members of Parliament could amend the legislation to remove what he described as 31 inserted clauses and restore the bill to its original form.
Dr. Opoku maintained that such a move would allow Dr. Bawumia to assent to what he termed the “original bill with the teeth and full piece of legislation” intended by lawmakers.
He questioned why the alleged amendments were introduced into the legislation if the intention was to maintain the original strength and effectiveness of the bill.
“If it was possible to water down the efficacy of the original bill, how come NPP MPs did not do so to make it very easy for Nana Akufo-Addo to assent to it before the end of his tenure?” he asked.
The comments add to ongoing political and public debate surrounding Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ legislation and the various legal, constitutional, and political issues associated with its passage.
The bill has remained a subject of national discussion, attracting differing opinions from political actors, civil society organisations, religious groups, and international observers.
